The operation of a reel-to-reel Nb 3 Al ohmic heating and quenching rig is described. Methods of temperature measurement and machine control are discussed, followed by the presentation of T c and J c results for several reel-to-reel processed strands. Presently the highest J c values are 1620 A/mm 2 at 12T. Additionally, a number of different Nb 3 Al precursors have been investigated using a short sample apparatus. Critical current density, J c , and microscopy results are presented for these wires. SEM studies have also been completed on as-received precursor wires and laminate structures which vary considerably from wire batch to wire batch and also between suppliers have been observed. Optical metallography of the A15 cores revealed a connection between porosity formation and Nb:Al stoichiometry.
