Laser induced fluorescence measurements on xenon are performed at the Institute for Space Systems of the Universitat Stuttgart which will be applied to plasma diagnostic investigations of ion thrusters in the near future. The two-photon excitation of neutral xenon is described as well as calibration procedures and the basic methods for particle density determination. A theoretical limit for the detection capabilities of the available set-up is determined. First laser spectroscopic results at different pressure levels, obtained with a cold gas cell for calibration purposes, are presented. Finally, methods for a further extension of the pressure range are discussed.
