In his article,“The Pitfalls of Deducing Ethics from Behavioral Economics: Why the Association of American Medical Colleges is Wrong about Pharmaceutical Detailing,” Thomas Huddle (2010) recapitulates several arguments against prohibiting drug detailing in academic medical centers. Briefly stated, Huddle argues that empiric data on the effects of detailing are not definitive, and that restricting interaction with sales representatives does not rise to the level of an “unqualified ethical imperative.” As a result, Huddle argues that professional ethics do not mandate an opposition to detailing, and that policy responses shouldAcknowledgments: Dr Steinman was supported by a career development award from the National Institute on Aging and the American Federation for Aging Research (K23 AG030999).
