The rationale for general as opposed to partial equilibrium analytical techniques has been identified in the discussion in Chapter 7. The purpose of other general equilibrium models discussed there was rather specific and therefore restrictive assumptions allowed us to avoid much elaboration of the underlying structure of the economy. There is however a body of research, applied or computable general equilibrium analysis, that has the explicit aim of representing the (general equilibrium) structure of an economy. The aim is to convert Walrasian principles into realistic and operational models of actual economies by specifying production and demand parameters and using data that relates to the particular economy involved. Once operationalised these models can be used to identify the effects of existing policies and evaluate the medium- to long-term implications of policy reforms on an economy-wide basis.
