Pentylenetetrazol enhanced the acoustic startle responses concomitant with enhancement of auditory evoked potentials in the reticular formation. The enhancement resulted in part from reversal of habituation-induced reductions in startle amplitude. These data support the idea that initiation of generalized seizures by sensory stimuli in animals treated with pentylenetetrazol may involve reversal of habituation and enhancement of startle mechanisms.
