between unions and the workers they represent. Although raised in the book, this plays out in a period beyond its scope and Forrest has to be persuaded to put pen to paper again. Metal That Will Not Bend is a book for many places and people. It should sit on a desk for a quick reference, on the lounge table to grab when trying to remember an event or a face, on the bookshelf amongst other significant books documenting how apartheid was brought to an end. Aside from those in Numsa, other researchers, educators, organisers, activists and union members interested in the past, present or the future of South African unions and politics will benefit from this well-conceived and expounded omnibus of a variety of themes and narratives that remain as current and contentious as they were in the period of apartheid’s demise.
