This review concludes that in schistosomiasis, immunity and hypersensitivity are directed against 2 different stages of the organism (neither of which multiply) and against different antigens. Immunity, therefore, can be fostered without enhancing immunopathology, and hypersensitivity can be suppressed without affecting resistance to infection. The multiplicity of immunologic responses may actually be beneficial by enabling the specific control of either the infection or the disease.
