Other chapters discuss the merits of Harlem Nights (1989), The Glass Shield (1994), and the impact of Ava DuVernay’s films on the overall canon. Alexander defends her choice of Harlem Nights as a departure from Eddie Murphy’s more mainstream successes and an example of how white and Black critics and audiences review culture-specific cinema and the consequences of such. The Glass Shield, made in the aftermath of the 1992 Rodney King verdict, could resonate with contemporary audiences. Based on real-life events, this muchoverlooked movie is a different take on Hollywood cop films and those made during the brief era of the new Black realism, juxtaposing Black men as the accused and law enforcement, and how the criminal justice system manipulated both. DuVernay provides a gender-specific perspective in a male-dominated industry. As an African American woman conscious of stereotypical images and the lack of opportunity in a creative process where they are often invisible, DuVernay creates works that speak to giving Black women and girls voice and agency in stories centered on their experience.
