IT IS generally believed that after intravenous administration of trace amounts of 67Ga, the radionuclide is bound to plasma proteins, chiefly transferrin. However, there is some discussion concerning the exact nature of the protein carrier, and previous studies have yielded divergent results (1-4! An in vitro study by HARTMAN and HAYES (‘) suggested that 67Ga was bound in serum to relatively large molecules. On the other hand, GUNASEKERA et al.@) reported that 67Ga is protein-bound, about 70”/, being loosely attached to serum albumin, transferrin and haptoglobin. HARA’~’concluded that the radionuclide behaved in the electrophoretic field mostly as a free compound and was partially associated with transferrin. This appears to be in marked contrast with the results of CLAUSEN et al t4) who reported that, apart from a weak binding to be; a-lipoprotein, Ga was firmly bound to transferrin. The purpose of this study is to determine the nature of 67Ga binding in the serum, as well as the factors affecting its binding.
