AFP is the dominant serum protein in early embryonic life. It is considered also to be a tumour-associated antigen because it appears in the sera of patients and animals with primary liver cancer1. The function of AFP in the foetus remains unknown. Tomasi et al.2 have demonstrated that mouse AFP has an immunosuppressive effect on antibody synthesis both in vivo and in vitro. Similarly, human AFP has been reported to have immunosuippressive properties3. One of us (E.F.Z.) has sihown that mouse AFP is heterogeneous, consisting of five components (Fp1-Fp5)4, which differ in the amount of sialic acid attached to the molecule: Fpl contains no detectable sialyl residues while Fp5 has four per molecule5. We have now demonstrated that the presence of sialic acid residues in the AFP molecule is essential for the immunosuppressive activities of this glycoprotein.
