NO doubt we are in the second great era of scientific communication. The Gutenberg press ushered in the first as it freed all writers from the grinding labor of bringing written creation to new pairs of eyes, and the Internet for better or worse has sped that mass production to deliver any writing to every connected human being. It was well after the first but just before the second era that I encountered the article by MacLeod and Gold in the dusty stacks of the University of Chicago library a few miles from the hospital where I trained as a resident. 1 I still remember the day 3 decades after it was written, when I pulled that year’s bound journal from its home on its shelf and my fascination with the mathematics of probability collided with my growing engrossment in the biology of reproduction. Another 3 decades have passed since then, and this piece of work remains as relevant and central as ever to male reproductive medicine in my care of patients, understanding of the field and hope for the future.Following foundational work on analyzing semen by Farris in The Journal of Urology®, 2 MacLeod published 2 articles in the first and second volumes of the then fledgling journal Fertility and Sterility, comparing differences in light microscopic observations of sperm based on work presented at the American Society for the Study of Sterility, which would later become the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. 3, 4 MacLeod published his subsequent article with Ruth Z.
