Throughout his study on a Chinese Buddhist catalogue of the Ming dynasty, Nanjio Bunyiu (1883) equated foshuo 佛説 at the beginning of sūtra names with Sanskrit Buddhabhāṣita, and translated it into English as “Sūtraspoken by the Buddha”. However, he did not give any reason for his rendition. Numerous English translations use “The Buddha Speaks ‘The Sūtra of…’” or “The Sūtra of… Spoken by the Buddha.” What is this term? Is it a translation of a Sanskrit word, a Chinese embellishment, or is it a fiction? In earlier manuscripts and woodblock prints, it appears to be arbitrary whether the title of a Chinese translation of a sūtra is given with or without foshuo.
