Because Wolf-Rayet stars are very young they remain closely associated with the massive dusty clouds in which they were formed. As a result W-R stars are, on average, very highly reddened. It is found that the frequency distribution of absorption values for W-R stars within 2 kpc of the Sun is adequately represented by the relation n(A v ) ∞ exp (-A v /10), i.e., half of all W-R stars have A v > 7 mag. W-R stars are believed to be the progenitors of massive core-collapse supernovae
