S UDDEN hearing loss is defined as the acute onset of neurosensory hearing loss, fortunately occuring most often unilaterally. The first such case was reported by Prosper Meniere in 1861. Very little information was available on this subject prior to 1956 but since that time much has been written and many cases reported.
