The presence on the lymphocyte surface of receptors capable of binding specifically with antigens is well established. These receptors play a considerable role in immunologic phenomena such as induction of the immune response, immunologic memory and tolerance (for references see reviews in Loor & Roelants 1977). Although the precise nature of antigen receptors on thymus-derived (T) cells is still one of the most controversial issues in modem immunology, a fair number of concordant experiments has established that bone marrow-derived (B) lymphocyte antigen receptors are immunoglobulin (Ig) molecules. The predominant class of surface Ig (SIg)
