only 12 of the 57 readings in this edition have been published since the first edition first hit the shelves, suggesting the success of the book is based on a steady evolution rather than ceaseless reinvention. If there is a criticism of the book, therefore, it is that it hardly represents the ‘cutting edge’ of urban research: the book is surely crying out for a section on urban theory that pays more attention to queer, post-colonial and feminist readings, and there might be more that could be made of the new urbanisms found in the Middle East (e.g. cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi which Mike Davis describes as ‘evil paradises’). Personally, I also found the omission of Doreen Massey’s influential work on London as a world city puzzling given it raises important points about the relationality of cities. This said, the book continues to sell on the basis that it enshrines the canon in urban studies – perhaps misleadingly given it now contains essays especially written for the collection. With the addition of new visual material, the Reader is increasingly taking on the look and feel of a textbook rather than a reader. This given, it is highly likely the book will not be used as the editors originally intended – as a primer to be read alongside a textbook, leading students towards original research papers and monographs – but as the only text students might consult on an introductory urban module. The popularity of this volume is entirely explicable therefore, but one suspects this might come at a cost: namely, that it closes down, rather than opens up, the possibility of students reading widely around the subject.
