The field-collected plankton were mainly composed of copepod nauplii and copepodites with size a range of 50-150μm. The detailed sampling and rearing method were described elsewhere1). The first feeding was observed 2-3 days after hatching. Five larvae were sacrificed for the observation of sagitta every five days. Standard length (SL) and dry body weight were measured. The number of otolith increments was counted with light microscopy of 600 •~ magnification. Growth of SL and dry body weight during the first 25 days after hatching are shown in Fig. 1. Because visibility of increments were clear as in Japanese sardine larvae, light microscopy counts were not examined by SEM.
