Investigated the nature and change over time of behavior problems among 289 residents (aged 55–96 yrs) in 41 special care units; Ss had been diagnosed with dementia, primarily Alzheimer's disease (AD). Behavior problems were evaluated using the Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist—Nursing Home Version at 3 time periods over 4 mo. Although behavior problems were prevalent in the sample, the total number of problems did not vary from Time 1 to Time 3. Virtually no changes were obtained on the aggregated data. For many items, change over time was evident on nonaggregated data, showing the individual residents were as likely to experience an occurrence of a new behavior problem as a drop in behaviors from Time 1 to Time 3. Age, gender, and score on the Mini-Mental State Examination were not related to whether patients tended to gain or drop behaviors over time.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
