This maxim, formulated in 1687 by Sir Isaac Newton [1] in his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, is one of the fundamental principles of science. Biological systems, such as the human body, are more complicated than the simple physical systems Sir Isaac was describing. Nevertheless, this maxim helps us understand why the trials of new therapies for sepsis have failed. In the human body, there is much we still do not understand about the response to infection or injury, and there are many biological phenomena that remain unknown. However, it is clear that the body can mount an overreaction, an underreaction, or a balanced reaction to injury or infection.
