Attempts at controlling schistosomiasis primarily using molluscicides are reviewed. Reasons for failure in Gezira in the 1950's and successes elsewhere are briefly discussed. The author's own experiences in the Sudan in 3 areas are used to illustrate the different control strategies needed to suit particular circumstances. How focal mollusciciding fits into these overall strategies is discussed.
