Focusing on the 1820s and London’s daily newspapers, Vieira argues that transformations in accident reporting were part of a wider transition to a modern culture of danger and risk, but that their peculiarities demonstrate that this broader transition was neither as epochal nor as straightforward as risk society theory presumes. This chapter argues that it was not the technological hazards of industrialization that drove the transformation of accident reporting, but rather the pressures that industrial modernity placed on the ways in which Britons imagined the structure of their society. As the cultural imagining of British society became more contested, discursive spaces where alternative social visions could be attacked or defended became more valuable, and because accident reporting tended already to focus on the social elements of disasters, its cultural currency increased dramatically.
