Since computers have been introduced to the teaching of mathematics. several pieces of software have been developed that are aimed at improving the learning process. Geometry is a domain of knowledge which is particularly involved with the growing use of software in teaching. because of the important role played by external representations (usually called figures) and the new ways of handling these representations made possible by software specifically designed for geometry.Computers offer facilities not only for drawing in a faster and more precise way than in a paper and pencil environment. but also for moving or modifying figures, thus often enabling the user to visualize geometrical propellies easily. The questions that are addressed in this chapter deal with the changes introduced into teaching and learning processes by such software. These changes will be mainly discussed below in terms of i) the new status of geometrical figures as mediated by the computer and ii) the behaviour of students when performing tasks on the computer.
