During the 1980s, the tide of antipathy in psychology toward genetic research changed to acceptance. Rarely now does it raise blood pressures to report evidence for genetic influence on personality, psychopathology, and cognitive abilities, the three domains that have been investigated most thoroughly, Results of family, twin, and adoption studies converge on the conclusion that these domains show significant and substantial genetic influence." Genetic differences among individ-uals often account for as much as half of the observed differences for dimensions and disorders within these domains. It is difficult to find psychological traits that reliably show no genetic influence. Asking whether genetic differ-ences contribute to observed differ-ences among individuals for a par-ticular behavior is a reasonable first step toward understanding the origins of individual differences. This basic nature-nurture question has scarcely been broached for some major domains of psychology, such as perception, learning, language,
