Seven coeloplanid species have been reported in Japanese waters, including Coeloplana astericola, C. bocki, C. echinicola, C. komaii, C. mitsukurii, C. willeyi, and C. meteoris. We performed detailed morphological examination of a newly recorded species in Japan, which was identified as Coeloplana bannwarthi. The molecular phylogeny of this species has also been discussed. Further investigations are essential to better understand the diversity of Coeloplana spp. in Japan.
