As the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic spreads in countries around the world, an increasing number of infants are being born with HIV infection acquired through their mothers. In the United States, AIDS had already become the ninth leading cause of death in children aged 1-4 years by 1987 (1). It is certain that the number of infected women and hence children must rise still higher, especially in those countries where rates among both men and women are already high, and where neither the prospect of dramatic changes of behavior nor the advent and application of a vaccine seem likely to stem the spread. The recent startling advent of infection among intravenous drug users and their female partners in Thailand (2, 3) and the emerging figures on infection among women from the Caribbean, Brazil, and several African countries are not encouraging.
