A survey was made of the distribution of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria of the genus Beijerinckia (syn. Azotobacter indicum Starkey and De) in soils. It was found that this organism occurs mainly in soils of tropical regions. In these regions Beijerinckia is far more frequently distributed than Azotobacter. Of the 148 tropical soils examined, 48 per cent contained Beijerinckia and 25 per cent Azotobacter. Of the 244 non-tropical soils tested 9 per cent contained Beijerinckia and 38.5 per cent Azotobacter. The only non-tropical soils which were found to contain Beijerinckia originated from Southern Europe (Medvea and Kostrena near Rijeka in Yugoslavia), South Africa (northern Transvaal and Cape Town), northern India (Koelpura, Himalaya Mts.), and Japan (Tokyo, Nikko National Park).
