Uses a mutual regulation model developed by the present authors (1985) to describe the infant's dual task of simultaneously regulating his/her internal emotional state and engagement with the external environment. The impact of mother–infant interactions and the depressed mother and infant regulation are examined. It is concluded that the pathways to normalcy or psychopathology are part of the same developmental process, with interactive error as the central event. When the infant cannot maintain self-and interactive regulation simultaneously, self-regulation becomes the predominant goal and psychopathology may result.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
