Plant mitochondria have long been recognized as being similar to their more extensively studied counter-parts in animals with respect to both form and function. However differences between plant and animal mitochondria have been reported. At one time, these differences were not felt to be real, but rather to be artifacts due to difficulties associated with isolating mitochondria from plant tissue. This view is no longer widely held, and as a result, it is now recognized that there are a number of distinct differences between plant and animal mitochondria. In this review, I will first outline several features which are specifically associated with the plant mitochondrial electron transfer chain. I will then take one of these features, the cyanide-resistant path of electron flow to oxygen, and discuss in more detail what is currently known regarding the nature of the pathway and the unusual cyanide-resistant oxidase which is apparently associated with it.
