Young rhesus monkeys were inoculated by the subcutaneous route with African and Asian strains of Chikunguya virus, O''nyong-nyong and Mayaro viruses. Infection and viremia was established in all animals except those inoculated with O''nyong-nyong virus. Complement-fixation, hemagglutination-inhibition and neutralization tests on the sera of these animals confirmed the serologic relationships between these viruses. A reciprocal cross-protection pattern was demonstrated by live virus challege procedures using the African and Asian strains of the Chikungunya virus and the Mayaro virus.
