Structures of the inactive and activated forms of the receiver domain of PhoB reported in this issue ofStructure(Bachhawat et al., 2005) suggest that the OmpR/PhoB subclass of transcription factors becomes active by dimerization about a symmetric axis utilizing the α4-β5-α5 surface.
