A screening programme for antiviral antibiotics led to the discovery of an unidentifiedStreptomyceswhich produced 2 such substances, the isolation of which is described in the preceding paper [Nature, 1965, v. 206, 263; thisBulletin, 1965, v. 40, (867)]. One of these has been identified as borrelidin, so-called 16 years ago because of its activity againstBorreliaspp. but without at that time any observations on its action on viruses. Borrelidin is highly activein vitroagainst several viruses, as determined by local inhibition of virus multiplication in mono-layer chick embryo tissue cultures, but it is too toxic to offer any hope of therapeutic utility. The second antibiotic, named vivomycin, delays and often prevents death in mice inoculated with encephalomyo-carditis virus, and has a low toxicity. No other virus infection responded to it in this way, although there was some effect on influenza in mice. Vivomycin is of polysaccharide nature, is likened to bacterial endotoxin, and is believed to act by stimulating host defences.L. P. Garrod.
