To investigate the behaviour of vitrinite during the early stages of hydrogenation, small blocks of four coals were treated with tetralin between 200 and 350 °C under hydrogen pressure (initial pressure 10 MPa) and then examined microscopically. Below 250 °C the vitrinite layers in the bituminous coals were observed to be swollen by this treatment, but above this temperature the degree of swelling was exceeded by the degree of surface dissolution. The vitrinite layers became porous > 300 °C and started to dissolve internally, which probably provided more favourable conditions for the hydrogen donor activity of the tetralin. Above 330 °C the remaining vitrinite began to alter to particles of vitroplast of various sizes. Their subsequent rate of dissolution was controlled mainly by the diffusion of both the tetralin and the hydrogenation products. In the case of Wandoan subbituminous and Yallourn brown coals, humic gel was dissolved at relatively low temperatures (300–330 °C) and the residual solid material (vitrofibre) was then gradually hydrogenated.
