The β variety of rare earth sulfides shows solid solution, the formula of which is L 10 S 14 O x S 1− x (L= La… Sm, 0⩽ x⩽ 1). The unit cell is tetragonal (14 1 acd) and contains 8 formulas. Oxygen and sulphur substitute for one another on the same site. The L 10 S 14 O oxysulfides exist with all rare earths from La to Sm. They are the most stable compounds of this family at high temperature. L 10 Se 14 O oxyselenides of La, Ce, Pr, and the solid solution La 10 Se 14 O x Se 1− x, also exist. The extent of the homogeneity range decreases from La to Sm. From determination of oxygen by activation analysis, true La 2 S 3 sulfide of β form seems to exist only with lanthanum. Lanthanum sulfide La 2 S 3 shows three polymorphic forms: α (orthorhombic), β (tetragonal), γ (cubic). The other rare earth (Ce to Tb) sulfides show only two: α and γ.
