Studies were made on various cattle sera which neutralized the infectivity of the bovine rhinovirus strain RS 3x. The neutralizing substance in these sera was not affected by treatment with kaolin, trypsin, periodate ion or receptor-destroying enzyme, and it exhibited a sensitivity to heat similar to that of antibody in immune calf serum.On separation by chromatography, the neutralizing activity of such sera was confined to fractions usually associated with immune globulins. The neutralizing substance was demonstrated in colostrum and was shown to change qualitatively and to increase quantitatively in serum with age.The sera from approximately 92 per cent of a local cattle population over 4 months of age were shown to possess a neutralizing capacity for the RS 3x strain. The neutralizing substance was considered to be specific antibody and it was concluded that infection of local cattle with the strain RS 3x or an antigenically related agent was not uncommon.
