Things like poor kids and gifted programs just don’t go together [in some people’s minds]. I mean, I think that people in their heart of hearts really think that, when kids are poor, they can’t possibly perform at the level of kids that are advantaged because they haven’t had certain kinds of advantages in their home. There is such a cause-effect relationship in gifted programs that creates barriers . . . I call them my list of prerequisites to being gifted. You must have two parents, they must be college educated. You must be in the suburbs. . . . And any time you have those factors missing, then it is very difficult for people to grasp this whole issue of giftedness in other groups. (Grantham, 2002, p. 50)
