C14 datings, especially for older samples, agree well with ages suggested on the basis of pollen analyses and varve studies, but younger samples tend to show large discrepancies. Ways in which samples may be fouled by more recent organic matter (giving too young a reading) or inactive C (too old) are suggested. The C14 method is valuable, but still sufficiently uncertain that other checks are needed.
