The total groove volume is estimated for a short (similar 1 mm) abrasion stroke of silver on dry grade-3 emery paper (mean particle diameter 150 μm) at approximately 1 kg load. This is compared with the mass wear rate, thus giving an estimate of the order of 10% for the proportion of the total groove volume removed as wear, in the case of silver surfaced initially on 0000 emery paper (diameter 5 μm); and approximately 30-40% for the silver surfaced initially on dry grade-3 emery paper. This shows that much of the work of abrasion results in deformation, slip and intense work-hardening of the surface region of the metal during plastic flow round the abrasive particles; and that the friction coefficient is mainly characteristic of such plastic flow, rather than of the removal of metal (wear) during the ploughing action of the abrasive particles.
