A greater understanding of the methods of growth and progression of neoplastic disease has led to the development of more extensive operations for the control of primary malignancies and their local extensions, with an increasing number of longterm survivors. As a result of this approach, successful surgical extirpation of isolated pulmonary metastatic lesions in these survivors has been reported with increasing frequency in recent years. 13 Although arbitrary criteria have been suggested for evaluating the operability of metastatic pulmonary disease, these have varied among institutions and surgeons. Furthermore, the results after resection, based on these criteria, are often disappointing. Consequently, a more uniform and precise method is needed for comparison of cases, evaluation of operability, and prediction of survival. The measurement of the tumor doubling time has been demonstrated to be an accurate and reproducible method
