I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed:“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.(“I Have a Dream,” August 28, 1963)August 28, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, much of which we now know was extemporaneously delivered on that day. In the more than 50 years since that speech, many things have changed. The more overt acts of racist violence (eg, lynchings) have decreased; the United States has elected an African American President; and many of the laws and policies Dr. King and his associates marched to protest (eg, the “Jim Crow” laws) have been changed. However, although there has been progress, racial/ethnic discrimination has in no way been eliminated, and increasingly we recognize that discrimination (or the resultant negative treatment that potentially derives from any minority group membership) can be experienced much more broadly by an array of subgroups. The US Equal employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has identified “race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, genetic information, or age” as groups who are protected against discrimination in employment (http://www. eeoc. gov/facts/qanda. html, accessed November 23, 2013). The site goes on to note that “Many states and municipalities also have enacted protections against discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation, status as a parent, marital status, and political affiliation.” Thus, there is emerging recognition that discrimination can occur toward members of many groups.
