This book contains the proceedings of the Asia Multiple Sclerosis workshop held in conjunction with the 12th World Congress of Neurology in Kyoto, Japan. It is largely concerned with the differences (and similarities) between multiple sclerosis (MS) in Asiatic and Western countries. The chief differences are that MS is less common in the East and tends more to appear initially with neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease). The latter is documented in countries in a wide arc between India and Japan. In Japan, where epidemiologic studies can no longer be discounted on grounds of poor medical standards, there is another difference, as no HLA antigen association has been found. Similarities have also been uncovered: the North-South gradient of Europe and the United States is apparently found also in Japan. Despite the varied origins of the contributors, the style is lucid. In fact, the English of the Western contributors stands most in need
