MATERIALS AND METHODSThe thyroids were from necropsies at Hammersmith Hospital. All thyroids sectioned over a period of 5 years (1948-1953) were studied. Sections were available in 40 per cent. of the necropsies carried out during this period. The preservation of thyroid tissue for histology was noted to depend more on the person carrying out the examination than on the nature of the disease, and because of this, and because the change that we were studying was not usually reflected by any macroscopic alteration in the gland, we consider that the trends shown in the age and sex distribution are generally reliable. The incidence of thyroiditis in the special diseases studied was compared with the baseline afforded by the general series. Each histological section (stained with hEmalum and eosin) was systematically examined under the low power of the microscope, and the number of foci of lymphocytic infiltration per square centimetre area of the Gp-thick section estimated. The sole criterion applied was the presence of a collection of lymphocytes or plasma cells easily visible with a, low-power objective. The presence of follicle breakdown or oxyphil cell change was not considered a prerequisite for the diagnosis of focal thyroiditisalthough folliclebreakdown was almost invariably, and oxyphil change frequently, present in those cases with more than 10 foci per sq. cm. Each section was sca, nned by two observers separately, and the necropsy findings were not consulted until after the section had been studied. Sections from 724 thyroids were examined in the general series; of these 612 were from patients aged 20 or over.
