The densities of social wasp nests in the cerrado vegetation of Brasília, Brazil, was estimated by demarcating transects in a cerrado of 700 ha where all bushes, shrubs and trees were examined. Nests of 4 species (Polistes satan, Polybia paulista, Parachartergus fraternusandMischocyttarus marginatus) were recorded. Nest density of all species combined was 6 per ha, but for each species the density ranged about 1-2 nests per ha. There is no preference among the wide variety of tree species available for nesting. The nest densities of social wasps are not site limited in the cerrado, but seem to be due to factors such as competition for food, predation, destruction of the nests' substrate and the distance from water sources.
