The applicability of the physical attractiveness stereotype to perceptions of the elderly was tested in 2 studies. In the 1st study, college age and old observers rated the physical attractiveness of faces of elderly people (age 60-93). On the basis of these ratings faces at 3 distinct levels of attractiveness were selected for use in the 2nd study. In the 2nd study 72 young adult and 72 old volunteers viewed the selected faces and rated them in 3 areas of perceived social characteristics: personality factors, success in life experiences and occupational achievements. The typical physical attractiveness stereotype was found for both groups of observers and in each of 3 areas of judgment. Multivariate analyses of variance for linear trends showed higher favorability of perceived social characteristics for faces with high perceived physical attractiveness.
