THE possibility of aluminium-silicon disorder and non-stoichiometry in sillimanite has been recently suggested1–3. This would conveniently explain discrepancies in the often determined position and slope of the univariant lines kyanite-sillimanite and andalusite-sillimanite. The principal candidate for disorder seems to be a fine-grained acicular variety of sillimanite known as fibrolite. Holdaway, for example, considers that it develops as a metastable, rapidly crystallizing phase, possibly containing excess silica3. This communication presents evidence that natural fibrolite does not differ in its ordering scheme, or composition, from coarser grained sillimanites.
