The recent rapid rise of anthropogenic greenhouse gas content in the atmosphere has been identified to be a serious environmental concern and does not support sustainable development for the global economy. Drastic emission reduction measures are necessary in the near term to stabilize the concentration of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere to an acceptable level while longer-term non-carbon based energy options are being developed. Geological sequestration of CO2 is a promising technology which can effect a rapid and large-scale reduction of GHG being emitted into the atmosphere and the technology is relatively mature. However, before considering CO2 sequestration projects, a site specific in-depth techno-economic, geological and physical analysis has to be completed to assess feasibility and ensure appropriate measures are put into place to monitor system performance and guarantee public safety and environmental protection. The following section summarises the concepts of geological sequestration and the important steps to be followed for its implementation.
