In this chapter, we present ways in which regional variations in personal concerns can be efficiently assessed in natural language—both in open-ended surveys and in cultural products, the published words of a culture. We begin by describing why personal concerns are best elicited in natural language. Next, we review recent studies that have assessed personal concerns in natural language within open-ended surveys and in unprecedentedly large numbers of cultural products. Finally, we illustrate the assessment of personal concerns expressed in open-ended essays across the United States from “This I Believe,” an archival project on the values of Americans. This chapter, then, provides an introduction to the advances in methodological toolkits that are enabling psychologists to elicit and to efficiently study personal concerns in time and place.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
