In eastern North America raised bogs occur roughly north and east of a line connecting stations with an average annual water deficiency (Thornthwaite 1948) based on a soil storage capacity of 10 cm (Figure 1). In the southern part of their range they are particularly abundant in an area near the Bay of Fundy which corresponds more or less with the Fundy Coast Section of the Acadian Forest Region (Rowe 1972) and the area mapped as spruce fir forest by Davis (1966).
