I recall receiving a special deck as a birthday gift when I was nine or ten. Though never especially adroit at cards, with that deck I too could perform all sorts of tricks-for one simple reason: each of the fifty-two cards was a three of clubs! Those on whom I played my tricks stood no chance whatever-no chance, because they were permitted no real choice.
