The degree of rotation in maximum extension and with the knee in the 160[degree] position was examined in 37 normal knee joints. The maximum extension in a mean rotation of 12[degree] was recorded and in the 160[degree] position amean of 23[degree]. In active or passive extension of the knee from the 160[degree] position, an outward rotation of about 7[degree] was usually found. This confirms the view of the "screw -home" movement. However, rotation either inward or outward could be obtained if a conscious effort were made to rotate the lower leg during the extension movement. Consequently, it was impossible to confirm the presence of an obligatory passive "screw-home" movement. The method of making the measurements is described and illustrated and the results presented in tabular form. There is a bibliography of 11 references.
