We have previously reported 2, 3 that eye opening in normal hght-reared Norwegian black hooded rats, is followed by a transient rise in tubulin synthesis in the visual cortex. It was suggested then that the brief elevation in tubulin synthesis was perhaps triggered by the changes in neuroelectric activity in geniculostnate fibres brought about by eye opening; also, that the phase of increased tubulin synthesis might correspond with a critical period in visual cortical development 3. The present study set out to test these suggestions. We first describe the effect of dark rearing on tubulin synthesis in the visual cortex and also report on how tubulin synthesis in dark-reared animals is affected by a 24-h exposure to a lighted environment. The aim here was to ascertain if sensitivity of the tubulin response to light exposure varies with the animal's state of maturation and postnatal age.
